Overview
Students will go through topics concerning ilm; beneficial & non-beneficial knowledge, its branches, signs of both types of knowledge, the juxtaposition between the superior way of the Salaf in contrast with the khalaf (latecomers). Various aspects from the Islamic sciences such as uṣūl al-fiqh, ‘aqīdah and taṣawwuf may come up in our discussions. This course will strengthen the student of knowledge regarding the methodology of the Salaf and thus their own practicing of this approach.
Learning outcomes
- Distinguish beneficial from non-beneficial knowledge (al-ʿilm al-nāfiʿ vs. ghayr al-nāfiʿ) according to Ibn Rajab's criteria, and identify the signs (ʿalāmāt) by which each is recognized — chiefly the fruits it produces in the heart, character, and conduct of its bearer.
- Trace the branches of legitimate religious knowledge back to their sources in the Book, the Sunnah, and the understanding of the Companions, recognizing what Ibn Rajab affirms as rooted in revelation versus what he critiques as innovated elaboration lacking that grounding.
- Contrast the methodology of the Salaf with that of the Khalaf, articulating why Ibn Rajab holds the earlier way to be superior — its restraint, its concern with action over disputation, and its avoidance of excessive delving (takalluf) in matters of uṣūl, ʿaqīdah, and taṣawwuf.
- Apply the Salaf's approach to knowledge in one's own study and practice, internalizing the disposition of sincerity, humility, and prioritizing action (ʿamal) over mere accumulation, so that learning becomes a means of tazkiyah rather than an end in itself.
