Course Description

An introduction to the rules governing the correct pronunciation and recitation of the Quran. Students learn the articulation points (Makhaarij al-Huroof), characteristics of letters (Sifaat), and foundational rules of Tajweed. By the end of the term, students are able to recite short surahs with proper Tajweed.

  • Identify and correctly produce all Arabic phonemes from their proper articulation points
  • Apply the core rules of Tajweed including Ikhfa, Idgham, Iqlab, and Izhaar
  • Recite Juz Amma with correct Tajweed under supervised assessment
  • Distinguish between heavy (Tafkheem) and light (Tarqeeq) letters in context

Week by Week Breakdown

Weeks 1–7

Review the course syllabus, learning goals, and format for the course.

Review the arabic alphabet. Discuss the characteristics of each letter (sifaat).

Continue reviewing the alphabet and the sifaat. Heavy (Tafkheem) vs Light (Tarqeeq) letters.

Articulation Points

Distinguish between the major and minor errors when reciting the Qu'ran.

Ikhfa and Idgham.

Iqlab and Izhaar.

Week 8 — Mid-Term Break

Weeks 9–15

Qalqalah. Mid-term exam will be given out at the end of this week to be completed before return from the break.

Maddul-Asli, Maddul-Far'ie, and Maddul-Muttasil

Maddul-Munfasil, Maddul-Aaridh Waqfi, Maddul-Leen Aaridh Waqfi, and Maddul-Lazim

Leen-e-Lazim and the rules of Waqf.

Special rules for Alif, Laam, and Raa

Review and intro to smaller rules.

Practice reciting Juz Amma.
